Cavapoo Feeding Guide: What & How Much to Feed

Feed a Cavapoo well and you'll head off half the health problems that plague small dogs. Here's how much they need, what to look for in a food, and what to keep off the menu.

How much should a Cavapoo eat?

There's no single number, because it depends on your dog's weight, age, activity level and the specific food. The reliable method is to start with the feeding guidelines on the food packaging for your dog's weight, then adjust up or down based on body condition (see the waistline test below). A working, bouncy young Cavapoo needs more than a sedate older one of the same weight.

Puppy vs adult feeding

Puppies have small stomachs and big energy needs, so they eat little and often:

  • Up to ~4 months: around 4 meals a day.
  • 4–6 months: drop to 3 meals.
  • 6+ months to adult: settle into 2 meals a day.

Use a food formulated for puppies until around 12 months, then transition to adult food gradually over about a week to avoid an upset stomach.

What to look for in a good food

Whether you feed kibble, wet, raw or a mix, the label matters more than the marketing. Look for a complete food (it says so on the pack) with a named meat ("chicken," "salmon") as the first ingredient, rather than vague "meat and animal derivatives." A named, quality food in the right quantity does more for your Cavapoo's coat, energy and gut than any supplement.

Treats and foods to avoid

Treats are brilliant for training but should stay under about 10% of daily calories — easy to blow past with a small dog. And some human foods are genuinely dangerous. Never feed: chocolate, grapes and raisins, onions and garlic, xylitol (sweetener found in some peanut butters and sugar-free gum), macadamia nuts, or cooked bones. When in doubt, leave it out and check with your vet.

Keeping your Cavapoo in trim

Small breeds gain weight alarmingly fast, and excess weight strains joints and shortens lives. Use the simple waistline test: you should be able to feel (not see) the ribs easily, and your dog should have a visible tuck-in at the waist when viewed from above. If the ribs are hard to find, cut back slightly and add a little more exercise. Weigh treats into the daily total, not on top of it.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I feed my Cavapoo?
Start with the food packaging's guideline for your dog's weight and age, then adjust to keep them at a healthy body condition — ribs easy to feel and a visible waist. Activity level and the food's calorie density both affect the right amount.
How many times a day should a Cavapoo eat?
Puppies eat 3–4 times a day depending on age; adult Cavapoos do best on two meals a day. Splitting food into two meals helps digestion and keeps energy steady.
What foods are dangerous for Cavapoos?
Never feed chocolate, grapes or raisins, onions or garlic, xylitol (a sweetener in some peanut butters and sugar-free products), macadamia nuts, or cooked bones. If your dog eats any of these, contact your vet promptly.
